IDEAS IN MEDALLIC SCULPTURE began as a Medialia...Rack and
Hamper Gallery event in 1998, and has continued for eleven
years. After several years of teaching a class in stone carving
at The University of the Arts, Philadelphia, Mashiko Nakashima
created this annual traveling exhibition series to encourage
students to become professionally involved with art. In its
current stage, the collaborative exhibition, NEW IDEAS IN
MEDALLIC SCULPTURE, is supported by a combination of the three
participating universities, individual patrons, and the nonprofit
organization, New Approach, Inc. NEW IDEAS is one of several
New Approach projects that encourages young generations to
express ideas in medallic sculpture. Exhibitions comprised
of young medallic sculptors have also been an essential part
of Medialia Gallery's philosophy from its beginning.

The
genesis of the NEW IDEAS exhibition project was the not-for-profit
organization, New Approach, Inc. The purpose of New Approach,
Inc. is to promote emerging artists and curators, as well
as to encourage public awareness of unconventional medallic
art.
